Strong Hitting Propels UC Over Elmira in Doubleheader

Clinton, NY – The Utica College baseball team played a doubleheader against Elmira College on Saturday at Hamilton College. The bats of UC were busy as the team won both games by scores of 14-8 and 15-5, improving to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in E8 play.
 
Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) batted 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with five RBI's, as he hit for the cycle in game two of the day. Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) went 5-for-8 on Saturday with five RBI's, thanks to grand slam in the first inning of game two. Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) was also great at the plate, hitting 7-for-9 to register three RBI's and four runs scored for UC.
 
Game 1:  
Elmira took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Utica responded. A five-run inning for the Pioneers, highlighted by a Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) RBI double, gave them a 5-3 lead going into the second. UC would produce six unanswered runs to earn an 11-5 run at the top of five. A triple by Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) sparked a three-run fifth inning to put the game away as the team walked away with a six-run victory in game one.
 
Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) went a perfect 3-for-3 in the contest with a double, two RBI's, and two runs scored. The designated hitter Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Tom Carrigan (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) notched a team-high three RBI's in the win. Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, three runs scored, and two RBI's.
 
Senior pitcher Alex Rocci (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) started on the mound and improved to 2-1 on the season, earning the winning decision. Rocci threw for four innings before being relieved by teammate Brian Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) in the fifth. Dinnen did not allow any runs to score during his shift on the hill.
 
Elmira's Dennis Rudolph went 3-for-3 in game one, scoring three runs for the team. First baseman Tommy Fogarty knocked in a game-high four RBI's on a 2-for-3 effort with his bat, while teammate Eddie O'Donnell IV connected for two hits in four appearances at the plate. Nick Cottone started at pitcher for the Soaring Eagles, as 10 runs came in on his watch in just over two innings of work. Cottone's record is now 0-3 on the season.
 
Game Two:
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) started off game two of the doubleheader with a bang, knocking out a grand slam in the first inning. A few moments later, shortstop Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) blasted a two-run homer, giving UC a 7-0 lead. Tiffin hit for the cycle with a homer in the first, a single in the third, a triple in the fourth, and a double in the eighth. Elmira could not match the fire power of its opponent in the contest, as UC's offense carried the team to a 10-run win.
 
Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI's as he hit for the cycle. Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) batted 4-for-6 in game two with two runs scored and one RBI. Third baseman Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) rattled off two hits in the contest, as he scored three runs and knocked in two RBI's. Jake Ryan (Kingston, NY/Kingston) connected for three hits in five at-bats, while Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) left his mark on the game with his grand slam in the opening inning.
 
Mark Spina (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler) received the winning decision as the starting pitcher, improving to 1-1 on the season. Spina surrendered just two earned runs in six innings pitched, before being relieved by senior Justin Shabman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Kennedy Catholic). Shabman struck out three batters in three innings, allowing just two runs to score during his time on the mound. Winning both games of the doubleheader pushes UC's record to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Empire 8 play this season.
 
Matt van Muelken registerd two RBI's for the Soaring Eagles in the game, as he batted 1-for-2. Tommy Fogarty went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored, while the shortstop Bryce Plante was 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the ninth inning. Five pitchers saw time on the mound for Elmira in the loss, as the starting pitcher Nick Sampogna (0-1) was given the loss after giving up seven earned runs in the first inning. Relieve pitcher Blake Phelps did not allow any runs to score in three innings of work, while also striking out three batters. The Soaring Eagles are now 1-15 overall and 1-6 in Empire 8 competition.
 
The Pioneers are back on the diamond on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with Cazenovia College. The game will be played on the road, beginning at 4 p.m.
