UTICA, NY — The Utica College women's lacrosse team is set to host SUNY Canton in its home finale Wednesday afternoon.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
 
Last Time Out: The Pioneers were defeated by the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College on Saturday by a score of 17-13… Naz jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before UC answered back with three unanswered goals from Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford), Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) and Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody)... UC would go into halftime down 10-7… Six straight goals to start the second half by Naz would be the deciding factor of the contest despite the Pioneers bringing the deficit to three goals with seven minutes remaining in regulation... Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) led UC with three goals and one assist apiece... Palmer, Capriglione and Wolff each added two goals while Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) chipped in a goal of her own... Sophomore goalie Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) snagged 13 saves in the loss.
 
Balanced Attack: The Pioneers have contributions coming from all over the roster… There are eight players who have scored 10 or more goals this season… The last time UC had eight players with at least 10 goals in a season was in 2009… Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) leads the pack with 29 goals, while Husnay has 26, and Palmer is right behind her with 23… Natalie Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) (19), DuMont (18), Wolf (18), Katie McDowell (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) (16), and Noelle Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) (11) round off the rest of the double digit scorers this season.
 
Won't Score If You Don't Shoot: The Pioneers are currently leading the Empire 8 in shots per game with an average of 34.64... They also rank second in goals per game (13.43) and third in shooting percentage, scoring 188 goals on 485 shots… Utica has also scored a conference-leading five goals while playing a woman down.
 
Husnay Continues Tear: With three goals and an assist against Naz, Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) now has 26 goals and 20 assists for a team-high 46 points… She also leads the squad in ground balls with 28 on the year… She ranks sixth in the conference in assists per game (1.43) and she is eighth in points per game (3.29)… Husnay has been held off the scoresheet just once this year and she has a 12-game scoring streak… Utica has not had a freshman lead the team in scoring since 2008 when Tammy Kohanski (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) netted 89 points (69 goals, 20 assists) in her first season of collegiate lacrosse.
  
Scouting Canton: SUNY Canton is on a five game winning streak coming into Wednesday's matchup… The Kangaroos hold an overall record of 9-5 and they are 4-0 on the road this season... They are led by junior MaryClare Bowes and sophomore Molly Denny... Bowes has scored a team-high 38 goals this season while Denny has 36 with a team-high 49 points... The Roos have held their opponents to five goals or fewer in four of their last five games.
 
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will wrap up there 2018 regular season with one more conference game, as they will travel to Alfred University on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
