UTICA, NY – The Utica College women's lacrosse team outscored visiting Canton 7-4 in the second half on its way to a 13-9 victory in the final regular season home game for the Pioneers at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Wednesday.
Utica freshman
Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) totaled six points on four goals and two assists and she leads the team with 52 points this season. Utica has won three of its last four games and improved to 9-6 overall on the season. UC has now won nine or more games in five of its last six seasons.
Canton snapped a five game winning streak and saw their record fall to 9-6 overall on the season.
The Pioneers will look to match the school-record of 10 wins on Saturday when they travel to Empire 8 Conference opponent Alfred University for their final regular season contest of the year. A win on Saturday would give the Pioneers 10 wins for the first time since 2014 and would bolster their resume as they look to earn one of the top four spots and a chance to play in the conference tournament for the first time since 2006.
Six different Pioneers registered at least one point in the contest.
Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) posted three goals and added one assist, while
Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) scored twice and assisted on another. Freshman
Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) also had another big game with two goals and one assist.
Miller now has 132 career points (107 goals, 25 assists) and needs just three more points to tie Casey Pelletier '08 for 10
th on the College's all-time scoring list. Wolff has 31 points this season and ranks second on the team with 11 assists.
Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) has now also eclipsed the 30 point marker in her first season in the blue and orange.
DuMont has caught fire as of late and now has eight points (six goals, two assists) in her last two outings.
Utica jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first 20 minutes of the contest before the visiting Roos outscored the Pioneers 3-1 in the final 7:03 of the first half to make the score 6-5 in favor of the home team at the half.
Husnay took over to start the second half as she netted three straight goals in just over four minutes to give the Pioneers a 9-5 lead with 21:41 left in regulation. The Pioneers then netted three of the game's next four goals to extend their lead to 13-6 with 7:20 left on the game clock.
Canton was able to threaten with three goals in the final 6:15 of the contest but the late rally fell short as Utica came away with the four goal victory.
Caroline Wiley (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Natalie Capriglione (New Milford, CT/New Milford) each posted four ground balls on the day, while
Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) helped the Pioneers control possession by collecting eight draw controls for the second consecutive contest.
Sophomore goalie
Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) came up big in the second half as she stopped 11 shots in the final 30 minutes of action to help preserve the Pioneer lead. She finished the day with 14 saves.
Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) caused a team-high three turnovers and the Pioneers out shot Canton 39-28 on the afternoon.
Canton was led by three points from Devin Kelly. Alison Auger and MaryClare Bowes each chipped in with two goals for the Roos. Canton goalie Nicole Piskorowski stopped 13 shots.
