Alfred Tops Utica in Season Finale

UTICA, NY -- The Utica College men's lacrosse team fell behind early and could not rally back as the Pioneers dropped a 23-5 decision on senior day against Alfred University in Empire 8 Conference action at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday.

Utica senior Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) capped his high scoring career with a team-best two goals and one assist on the day.  Before the start of the contest the Pioneers honored their graduating seniors: Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic), Justin Potocki (Verona, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill), Anthony Thomas (Clinton, NY/Vernon Verona Sherrill), Patrick Dickson (West Palm Beach, FL/Cardinal Newman) and Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew).

Desveaux will graduate ranked fourth on the College's all-time list with 132 career points. His 107 goals also rank fourth all-time at UC. His 43 goals this season are a career high and rank fifth on the College's all-time single season list.

Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) capped an excellent two year career in the blue and orange and will graduate with 83 career points (55 goals, 28 assists). Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) set a new career-high with 20 goals this season and will graduate with 87 career points on 46 goals and 41 assists.

Jake Bratek (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Jared Smaldon (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and freshman Dylan Dunham (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) each added one goal for the Pioneers on Saturday, while Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), Nicholas Horne (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) each totaled one assist.

Michael Foresti (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led the Pioneer defense with three ground balls and he also caused two turnovers.  Alexander finished the day with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) also added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Saxons jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and held a 13-3 advantage at the half. The visitors went on to outscore UC 10-2 in the second half on their way to an 18 goal victory.

Junior goalie Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) got the start in net for UC and stopped 13 shots in the loss. Brad Schulman (Airmont, NY/Suffern) came on in relief and posted two saves for Utica.

Chris Doktor earned the victory between the pipes for the Saxons as he posted five saves. Alfred was led offensively by nine goals from Jake Lynch, while Joe Fornataro posted eight points on five goals and three assists. Jake McNaney rounded out the top three scorers for Alfred as he posted two goals and added three assists.

UC caps its season with a 6-9 overall record and a 2-5 ledger in the Empire 8.  Alfred has qualified for the E8 Tournament and finished the regular season with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in conference play.

Alfred won 26-of-31 face offs on the day to control possession and the Saxons also went 9-for-17 on man-up opportunities.
