Utica, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team held nationally-ranked No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology to just nine goals in the first half, but the Ducks came out firing with an 11 goal third quarter on its way to a 24-1 Empire 8 Conference victory on Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Stevens handed Utica its first conference loss of the season as the Pioneers' record moved to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Utica looks to get back on track Wednesday when the Pioneers host crosstown rival SUNY Polytechnic in their final non-conference contest of the season at 4 p.m.
Utica senior
Nick Yelich (Lancaster, NY/Depew) netted the lone goal of the contest for the Pioneers, his 16th goal of the season, at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter to make the score 4-1.
Freshman defensemen
Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) led the way on the defensive end for Utica as he posted a team-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Freshman goalie
Ryan Boshart (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) stopped 13 shots as he picked up his first loss of the season.
Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) and
Hunter LaPlace (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) each added two caused turnovers and two ground balls for the home team.
All-American Max Bailey led the way for the Ducks with 11 points on one goal and 10 assists. Ryan Gebhardt netted a game-high six goals, while Brendan Monteleone added four goals and one assist. 14 different players tallied at least one point for the conference leading Ducks. Nico Ipeker added five points on two goals and three assists.
Scott Wedgeworth was a perfect 10-for-10 at the faceoff x and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Alex Caseiro and Nicholas Carnovale each posted four ground balls for the visitors.
Carson White got the win between the pipes for the Ducks as he stopped four shots before being relieved at halftime.
Stevens improved to 10-2 overall and remained unbeaten at 3-0 in Empire 8 play. The Ducks racked up 37 shots on goal and successfully cleared 24-of-26 opportunities.
