HOBOKEN, NJ- The Utica College softball team fell to host Stevens Institute of Technology 1-0 and 7-1 in its Empire 8 Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers drop to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the E8. Utica will have a busy upcoming week with doubleheaders scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The week will begin at local rival, Hamilton College on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Utica 0, Steven 1- Game One Final
The opening game of the day was a pitcher's duel as neither team gave up a run through five innings. Stevens got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Olivia Gemma grounded into a double play, but was able to drive in a run to take a 1-0 lead.
Despite getting the leadoff batter on base, Utica was not able to get anything going in the seventh inning as it dropped the 1-0 decision.

Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) each had one hit for the Pioneers. Freshman
Gabby Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) gave up just three hits and was able to work her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning, but it was not enough.
Utica 1, Stevens 7- Game Two Final
The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they remained unbeaten in conference play. Following a three-run homer by Corinne Loncar to put Stevens on the board, Utica got one back in the fourth inning when
Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) hit an RBI single to score
Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich).
Stevens scored two runs in each of the next two innings to all but seal the victory.
Junior
Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) led Utica going 3-for-3 to bring her season batting average to a team-best .429. Jacqueline Aornin and
Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) also had hits.
Sabrina Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) gave up seven hits as she shouldered the loss, while Stevens' Marissa Cappello struck out seven and gave up just five hits in the win.
