Men's Soccer to Battle SUNY Canton on the Road

Utica, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team is traveling to battle SUNY Canton on Wednesday. This non-conference bout is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Last Time Out: Over the weekend UC hosted both SUNY Cobleskill and Oswego State. The Pioneers are now currently 2-3 on the year after a loss to Oswego and a win over Cobleskill. In the 4-3 victory over the Fighting Tigers, Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) netted two scores for Utica. Nicolas Diaz (Commack, NY/Commack) also had a goal, while Thomas Muller (Camillus, NY/Bishop Ludden) and Salvatore Cabibbo (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) each registered an assist. Senior Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing) scored the golden goal in overtime, lifting UC over SUNY Cobleskill.

Fonseca's Production: After receiving All-Conference Honorable Mention last season, Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) has already matched his goal output from his junior year. Fonseca finished last year with four goals and currently has four scores in the first five game of his senior campaign. He has nine total points so far in 2018, marking the halfway point of matching 2017's total of 18 points. Fonseca is tied for first in the Empire 8 in goals scored and is second in total points in the conference.

Scouting Canton: The Kangaroos are currently 1-2-1 overall after playing SUNY Poly to a 0-0 draw in their last game. Canton has already played in three overtime games this early in the season, including a 1-0 win over Wells College. Dustin Brown scored the game-winner just 53 seconds into the second period of extra time. Brett Anderson is the only other member of the roster to record a goal thus far, coming during the 2-1 loss to Bard College.

Last Year's Matchup: The last meeting between these two teams produced a 4-1 winning result for Utica. Julian Fonseca (Rocky Hill, CT/Bridgton) finished with two scores and an assist, while other goals were recorded by Alex Purcell (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem). The lone score for SUNY Canton was credited to Nick Magliano. UC outshot the Kangaroos 15-7 in the contest and was awarded five more corner kick opportunities.

Looking Ahead: After this quick trip to SUNY Canton, the Pioneers will be back to kick-off a three-game home stand. The team will play host to Empire 8 opponent, Alfred University at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
