Men's Hockey Outlasts Cortland; Earns Second Straight Shutout

UTICA, NY- For the second night in a row, the Utica College men's hockey team did not allow a goal, this time as it defeated SUNY Cortland 3-0 in non-conference action Saturday evening.

With the win, Utica improves to 12-6-1 on the year.  The Pioneers have now won seven straight at home and have outscored opponents 42-10 at the Adirondack Bank Center this season. The Pioneers remain home next weekend as they host Elmira College and Lebanon Valley College for a UCHC set.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

Despite outshooting the Red Dragons 25-8 in the first period, Utica had nothing to show for it as the teams went into the locker room tied 0-0 after the first 20 minutes.

Sophomore Conor Landrigan (New Tripoli, PA/Binghamton Jr. Sens (NAHL)) finally broke the deadlock with 1:56 remaining in the second period as he ripped a shot into the upper right hand corner for his sixth of the year.  Daniel Fritz (Harwood, MD/Canisius College (Atlantic Hockey)) and Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA/Charlotte Rush (USPHL-Premier)) assisted on the power play tally.

Utica added another power play goal at 11:24 of the third as senior Zach Borsoi (Brossard, Quebec/Gloucester (CCHL)) found the back of the net with his shot from the point to give Utica a two-goal cushion.  Justin Allen (Rochester, NY/Rochester Monarchs (USPHL-NCDC)) and Joey Savel (Sterling Heights, MI/Philadelphia Little Flyers (EHL)) were credited with assists on the play.  Borsoi sealed the win with 1:11 remaining as he buried an empty netter for his eighth of the year, assisted by Gregg Burmaster (Clinton, NY/Colorado College (NCHC)) and Jamie Bucell (Garfield Heights, OH/Philadelphia (EHL)).

Gianluca Baggetta (Maple, Ontario/North York (OJHL)) was once again rock solid in net, stopping all 24 shots he faced for his second shutout in as many nights.  Nick Modica made 44 saves for Cortland.  The Utica special teams were clicking as the power play went 2-for-3, while the penalty kill held Cortland scoreless on three man-advantages.
