WILKES-BARRE, PA- The Utica College women's hockey team picked up the UCHC weekend sweep as it downed host Wilkes University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers have now won three straight, all of which were conference games.
Utica got on the board at 8:46 of the first period as sophomore
Maddie Paydos (Simsbury, CT/Vermont Academy) netted her first of the year, off an assist from freshman
Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy).
The score remained the same until 6:17 of the third period when freshman
Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) found the back of the net to give UC an insurance tally. Whitney now has one goal in each of the last three games. Freshman
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) and sophomore
Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) assisted on the eventual game-winner.
Wilkes finally got on the board at 8:14 of the third when Kendall Castro put in a feed from Brianna Stanton for her first of the year. Ashley Murry also had a helper on the play.
Utica outshot the home team 49-8 on the day. Alexa Rango made 47 saves for the Colonels, while senior
Bria Reilly (Hamden, CT/Brewster Academy) finished with seven saves to pick up her second win of the season.
The Pioneers (3-1, 3-0 UCHC) return to action next weekend as they host William Smith College and Elmira College on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Friday's faceoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. while Saturday's game will be at 2 p.m.
