ASTON, PA- Six different players scored as the Utica College men's hockey team downed host Neumann University 6-2 in UCHC Conference action Saturday.
Utica improves to 2-0-1 to start the season and picks up its first conference weekend sweep after downing Manhattanville on Friday by the score of 5-2. UC will return to action Friday evening as it hosts Nazareth College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick start as junior transfer
Kasper Kjellkvist (Vaxjo, Sweden/Curry College (Commonwealth Coast Conf.)) netted his first goal as a Pioneer just 4:03 into the first period.
Conor Landrigan (New Tripoli, PA/Binghamton Jr. Sens (NAHL)) and
Brandon Young (Muskegon, MI/Johnstown (NAHL)) assisted on the opening goal.
Utica took a 2-0 lead at 8:30 of the second period when
Justin Allen (Rochester, NY/Rochester Monarchs (USPHL-NCDC)) netted his first of the year, off assists from
Brandon Osmundson (Chesapeake, VA/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL)) and
Tyler Pietrowski (Curtice, OH/Odessa Jackalopes (NAHL)). The Knights got one back at 13:19 as Chris Caldwell netted a power play tally for his first goal of the season. Zac Boyle and Barry Kneedler were credited with assists on the goal.
Utica regained the two-goal cushion at 2:09 of the third off the stick of
Josh Haskin (Troy, NY/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders (USPHL)).
Joey Rutkowski (Rome, NY/Smiths Falls Bears (CCHL)) and
Brett Everson (Mississauga, Ontario/Hawkesbury (CCHL)) assisted on Haskin's first of the year. The home team struck back just 56 seconds later as Kneedler scored one of his own, assisted by Eric Madison and Devin Joyce to bring the deficit back to one.
UC used three more goals in the third period including back-to-back power play goals by
Daniel Fritz (Harwood, MD/Canisius College (Atlantic Hockey)) and
Dante Zapata (Huntington Beach, CA/Austin Bruins (NAHL)) and freshman
Buster Larsson (Bunkeflostrand, Sweden/Syracuse Stars (NCDC)) put the exclamation point on the game with his first collegiate goal just over the halfway mark of the period.
Rutkowski finished with three assists on the evening while Landrigan and Osmundson each had two helpers.
Donovan Ott (Lebanon, PA/Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (ECAC Hockey)) and
Jamie Bucell (Garfield Heights, OH/Philadelphia (EHL)) were also credited with one assist each.
Freshman goalie
Joseph Giacobbo (Deptford, NJ/Rockland Nationals (CCHL)) made 24 saves in net to pick up the win in his first collegiate start, while his counterpart, Mike Cosentino made 23 saves for Neumann.
