Pzrygoda Posts Double-Double in Final Win of 2019

UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica College women's basketball team closed out the fall semester with a big win over Morrisville State on Saturday afternoon.

Despite trailing by five (11-6) in the opening minutes of the contest, Utica was able to gain momentum behind a Kristine Miller (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) layup with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter, owning its first lead 17-15. The Pioneers never looked back and were able to piece together a seven-point run to round out the stanza, as Miller posted another layup paired with a Kimberly Soriano (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy Memorial) made three.

UC just carried its run into the second quarter, posting two layups, one a piece by Soriano and Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) to open an 11-point lead. Przygoda's tally forced the Mustangs to call a full-timeout.

Although it never relinquished its lead, Utica did see its cushion be chipped away, leading by just three. It successfully stopped a second chance game-tying three pointer at the end of the half, as Przygoda was able to come off the boards with the defensive rebound.

The sophomore remained strong in the third, posting the opening layup in the first minute to extend her squad's lead. Her efforts were matched by a pair of Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) free throws for a 45-39 lead. A lead which again dwindled to two-points late in the quarter.

The duo worked together to close out the stanza with a five-point run to lead 57-50, as DeMarco made a jumper at 1:27, followed up by a layup and free throw by Przygoda in the final seconds.

Utica was able to maintain its lead, not letting it dip below six points in the fourth quarter, reaching its largest margin with 2:51 remaining in the contest, 18 points (79-61). UC outscored the 'Stangs 24-14 in the final 10 minutes, for its most productive period.

The Pioneers were led by Przygoda with another double-double added to the season, on a team-leading 29 points and 11 rebounds. DeMarco was close behind with a second-best 15 points and seven rebounds.

UC women's basketball will return to action in the New Year, set to host Union College at 4 p.m. on Jan. 3.
