UTICA, NY – The 5-1 Utica College women's basketball team will go on the road for a non-conference matchup against the 1-2 SUNY Poly Wildcats Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers were set to face Alfred in a non-conference matchup on Monday, but the game was postponed due to weather. Utica was victorious in its last outing against SUNY Delhi by a final score of 98-50. Sophomore forward
Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) led the team in points, as she scored a career-high 30. She also recorded four steals and an assist on the day. Senior guard
Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) recorded seven assists in the contest while contributing 15 points of her own.
HOT STREAK: Utica continues its dominance on the court, improving its record to 5-1 thus far. This is the best start for the Pioneers since 2009, where the team finished 22-7 after winning five of its first six games.
THE UNSTOPPABLE: Przygoda is a powerhouse for this Pioneers squad. Through six games, she leads her team and the conference with a total of 139 points. She also leads her team with 67 rebounds, which is second-most in the Empire 8 Conference. She is averaging a double-double through her first six games with 23.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Pryzgoda has now scored at least 20 points in five of her last six contests.
CONFERENCE LEADERS: Conkin is ranked second in the E8 with 108 points. She leads the conference in assists (40) and steals (26). Sophomore guard
Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) has netted 16 3-pointers so far, leading the conference with a 48.5 shooting percentage from downtown.
TEAM CONTRIBUTORS: Five Pioneers scored in double digits against SUNY Delhi, which included Junior guard
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic), who scored a season-high 14 points and junior guard
Kimberly Soriano's (Queens, NY/Monsignor McClancy Memorial) season-high 11.
AS A UNIT: Utica has outscored its opponents 514-303. Every Pioneer has attempted at least one shot so far this season. The Pioneers have out rebounded their opponents 260-224. As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 33.5 percent from behind the arc.
SCOUTING SUNY POLY: The Wildcats are led by Molly Burdick, who has totaled 31 points on the year while tabbing an 88.9 shooting percentage. Taylor Aybar leads the team with 13 steals and nine rebounds as well.
HISTORY: The Pioneers are 23-13 when facing the Wildcats and have an 11-7 record when hosting them. Utica had a 16-game winning streak against its cross-town rival, dating from 2000-10.
