Baseball Tops Cornell & Falls to Marymount in Florida

Auburndale, FL – The Utica College baseball team took on Cornell College and Marymount University on Wednesday. UC took down Cornell, 5-2, in game one of the day before falling to Marymount, 7-4.
 
Against Cornell
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) was a big part of the victory over Cornell College, knocking in three RBI's on a seventh inning double and going 1-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS), Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River), and Charles McAllister (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) all batted 1-for-4 in the win. Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) connected for one hit in three tries, scoring one run.
 
Griffin Baur (New York Mills, NY/New York Mills) struck out nine batters in seven full innings pitched as the starter for UC, improving to 1-1 on the mound with the winning decision. Justin McKenna (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior HS) stepped to the rubber in the eighth inning, striking out three and allowing just one earned run.
 
Cornell scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead early on. Quinlan would score in the sixth inning, on a wild pitch, to even the score before rattling off a three-RBI double in the seventh. Brian Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) was also able to score a run for the team to give Utica a 5-1 advantage. Cornell would add one more run to its total before the game ended, but the Pioneers held on for the win.
 
Against Marymount
Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) was walked twice and stole two bases in the second game of the day. Although he did not register a hit, Medici touched home plate twice for two runs scored. Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) earned his 1-for-4 batting performance with a double. Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) and Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) each connected for one hit and scored one run.
 
Jonathan Hardy (Clinton, NY/Clinton) three just over four innings, surrendering four earned runs and striking out just two batters. Hardy's record drops to 0-2 so far this season as a starter on the mound. Mark Spina (Frankfort, NY/Frankfort-Schuyler) came into the game as a reliever, not allowing any runs to score and striking out two.
 
Marymount got things started in the second with a three-run inning to seize an early lead. UC scored two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit down to one goal. However, Marymount gained some insurance in the bottom of the fifth to secure a 7-3 lead. Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) stole home base in the eighth inning, but the team was unable to rally back, falling in the second match of the day.
 
The Pioneers are now 2-6 overall so far this season with just one more game left to play at the Russ Matt Invitational. The team will matchup with Rhode Island College on Thursday at 9 a.m.
