Alfred Tops Utica in Empire 8 Play

ALFRED, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team held a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter, but the host Alfred University Saxons netted five consecutive goals to take the lead and outscored the Pioneers 10-1 in the fourth quarter to earn a 16-5 victory in Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday.  

Utica freshman John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) netted a team-high three goals, while John Hanlon (Coconut Creek, FL/St. John Paul Academy) added one goal and two assists to pace the Pioneers.  Utica (4-6, 0-2 Empire 8) will look to snap a three game slide back at home on Wednesday when the Pioneers host The Sage Colleges at 4 p.m. Alfred's record improved to 6-2 overall and the Saxons remain unbeaten at 2-0 in E8 play. 

Dale Wagner (Elbridge, NY/Jordan Elbridge) also added a goal for the Pioneers, while Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park) made 15 saves in the loss. Kevin Parisi (Glenwood, NJ/Vernon Township) led the defense once again with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.  John Avery (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon), Harrison Bower (Northport, NY/Kings Park), Nick Alexander (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), Michael Foresti (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Tyler Crouse (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Tyler Giachinta (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) and Tom Zegarelli (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) each posted three ground balls for Utica.  

Five Saxons scored three or more points in the victory. Cale Donegan led the home team with five goals and one assist. Joe Fornataro totaled five points on three goals and two assists, while Jack Chapman added three goals of his own. Goalie Scott Kimiecik stopped 13 shots in the victory for the Saxons.
