Palmer's Overtime Heroics Lift Women's Lacrosse to Win Over Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY- Junior Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) netted the game-winning goal with 3:04 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Utica College women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 victory over host Hartwick College in Empire 8 Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Utica improves to 10-3 on the year and 4-2 in the Empire 8.  10 wins matches the program record for wins in a season.  The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they host Elmira College for senior day.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 13:12 of action thanks to goals by Palmer and senior Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville).  The teams traded scores over the next 14 minutes and Utica carried a 6-5 lead into halftime.

UC took an 8-6 lead with 18:25 remaining in the second half, but Hartwick responded with a pair of its own to even the score at 8-8 with 10:16 left to play.  Freshman Jessie Biegel (Ridge, NY/Longwood) gave Utica the go-ahead with 5:52 left, but once again Hartwick evened the score to force the overtime period.

Neither team could get anything going in the first overtime, but Palmer converted on a free position halfway through the second OT to send Utica home with the win.

Palmer finished with a team-high four goals, while Scarpinella had three goals and one assist. Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) and Addison Green (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) also chipped in with goals for the Pioneers, while Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each had one assist.

Junior Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) made 11 saves in the win, while Hartwick's Ashley Jablonowski finished with 26 saves.
