Softball Runs Away With Sweep at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Utica College softball team cruised to a sweep over host Union College in non-conference action Thursday as it downed the Dutchwomen 11-4 and 8-0.  Junior Sadie Evans (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 5-for-7 on the day with four RBIs to pace the Pioneers.

Utica 11, Union 4- Game One Final
After two scoreless innings, Utica used three runs in the third and fifth to take a 6-2 lead and then broke the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

Sophomore Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) got things going in the third inning as she singled to right center to score Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South).  The next batter, Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School) brought home Stransky and Madison Judge (Albany, NY/Colonie) with a double to centerfield.

After Union cut the deficit to one, The Pioneers tacked on three more scores in the fifth inning thanks to RBIs by Sadie Evans (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School), and Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack). The Pioneers turned up the pressure with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning.  The Dutchwomen plated one in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late as Utica went on to pick up the win.

Stransky was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Rice and Evans were each 2-for-4.  Aronin and freshman Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland) were each 2-for-5, while Miller and Renee DeResh (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) each had one hit.

Gabriella Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) struck out five and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work, while Jane Field (Waterford, NY/Catholic Central) gave up one earned run in three innings of relief work.

Utica 8, Union 0 (6 Inn.)- Game Two Final
After another slow start, Utica's bats came alive, scoring one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to come away with the run-rule victory.

The Pioneers got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck High School).  Utica continued the rally in the fifth as Sadie Evans (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a home run to left field that scored two.  UC added another run later in the inning as Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run.

The Utica bats stayed hot as the Pioneers tacked on four more runs in the sixth thanks to RBIs by Evans, Madison Judge (Albany, NY/Colonie), and Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland).

Evans was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored to lead the way.  Renee DeResh (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) was 2-for-3, while Paul and Judge were each 2-for-4.  Aronin, Nicole Rice (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Jamie Miller (Boonville, NY/Adirondack), and Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School) each had one hit.

Junior Alyssa Samborin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) fanned two and allowed just five base runners to pick up her fifth win of the season.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday as they travel to Elmira College.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
