PITTSFORD, NY – The Utica College baseball team dropped a pair of road games at St. John Fisher College on Sunday. The Pioneers took an early lead in game one, but the Cardinals rallied to earn an 8-5 victory. Fisher jumped out to a 12-0 lead in game two and never looked back on its way to a 17-3 victory.
Utica's record moved to 12-18 overall and the Pioneers are now 6-6 in Empire 8 Conference play. UC has six key conference contests down the stretch as they make a final push at a top four spot in the conference standings in order to qualify for postseason play. UC travels to Canton on Tuesday to complete a tied 5-5 ballgame that was halted in the top of the ninth inning due to darkness back on April 10th. UC and Canton will then wrap up the regular season series immediately following the completion of the suspended contest.
Senior slugger
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) went 4-for-8 with one RBI on the afternoon, while
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) added a 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs in game one. Senior shortstop
Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS) also went 3-for-4 two runs scored in game one.
St. John Fisher 8, Utica 5 – Game One
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning of game one behind RBI singles from
Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) and
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame). Leviton's single to center scored
Christopher Ramsundar (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady), while Fitzgerald's single to right field scored
Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS). Fisher answered by plating three runs in the first two innings to take a 3-2 lead.
Ramsundar singled through the left side in the top of the fourth inning to score
Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) and the game was tied at 3-3.
Fisher took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Pioneers answered once again as Fitzgerald posted his second RBI of the day in the fifth inning, scoring Tiffin. The Cardinals pushed three runs across in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.
Quinlan drove in Ramsundar in the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-5, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get in the three run loss.
Freshman hurler
AJ Farina (Sherrill, NY/VVS) struck out three and allowed four runs in 4.0 innings for work on the mound for UC.
Taylor Hartman (Galway, NY/Galway) came on in relief and did not allow an earned run in 1.2 innings.
St. John Fisher 17, Utica 3 – Game Two
Fisher came out firing in game two and worked a 12-0 lead in the first five innings to dominate game two. The Cardinals went on to earn a 17-3 victory in the nightcap.
Ramsundar and
Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) each posted two hits in game two. Palmer also recorded one RBI and one run scored.
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game.
Jacob Gaboriault (Colchester, VT/Essex) went 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Haydn Demers-St. Hilaire (North Lawrence, NY/St. Lawrence Central) struck out one and allowed just two earned runs in 3.0 innings on the mound in game two.
