Aurora, NY – Senior
Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck) went a perfect 6-for-6 at the dish and became the program's all-time leader with 143 career hits as the Utica College baseball team defeated host Wells College 13-10 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. Quinlan came up just a double shy of the cycle as he posted one home run, one triple and three singles, to go along with three RBIs and five runs scored.
Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored, while
Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) added two hits and three RBIs, while
Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) also added two hits and one RBI.
UC's record improved to 4-11 overall on the season and the Pioneers have won two of their last four outings headed into Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Stevens on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Five Pioneers toed the rubber on the afternoon and
Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) came away with the victory after allowing just two hits in 2.2 innings of scoreless ball.
Joe Palmieri (West Islip, NY/West Islip) came on in relief and closed the door, picking up his third save of the season for the Pioneers.
Sean Morris (Califon, NJ/Voorhee) got the start on the mound for Utica and struck out three in 2.0 innings of work.
Christian Tiffin (Sherrill, NY/VVS),
Charles McAllister (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and
Thomas Giglio (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each posted one hit for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers trailed 5-2 headed into the top of the fourth inning before making a charge. Medici tripled to right field, scoring Giglio to make the score 5-3. Quinlan then singled through the middle to score Medici, and Fitzgerald singled to right center to score Quinlan to knot the score at 5-5.
UC tacked on three runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead. Quinlan, Fitzgerald and Palmer each drove in one run in the inning. Wells took the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth as the Express plated five runs to take a two run lead, 10-8.
Medici made it a one run game, 10-9, after a fielder's choice RBI scored McAllister. Leviton then double to right center with the bases loaded, scoring Fitzgerald, Quinlan and Medici to give the Pioneers a 12-10 lead that they would not relinquish.
Quinlan capped the scoring on the day with a towering home run in the top of the ninth as he moved into a tie for third place on the College's all-time list with 14 career home runs.
