Pioneers Score First E8 Win Against Stevens

UTICA, NY - The Utica College baseball team split their Empire 8 doubleheader on Sunday against the Stevens Institute of Technology. The Pioneers won game 1 by a 7-5 score to earn their first Empire 8 conference win of the season, but dropped the second game to the Ducks by an 18-6 final tally. The Pioneers are now 5-13 overall, and 1-4 in the Empire 8 conference.

Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) had three RBI, including driving in the winning runs in Game 1 for the Pioneers, and Jon Hardy recorded his first NCAA pitching win since transferring in from the NJCAA level.

The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday for a single game against Hamilton College.

Game 1: Utica 7, Stevens 5

Ryan Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) singled to center field in the bottom of the fourth to put the Pioneers up 7-3, and Utica bullpen arms Brendon Sarnowski (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and Joe Palmieri (West Islip, NY/West Islip) short circuited an attempted Stevens rally to just two runs as the Pioneers nabbed their first Empire 8 win of the season.

The game was a see-saw battle with Utica plating the first two runs in the first on an RBI double by Tim Quinlan (Monroe, CT/Masuck), and a groundout by Matt Fitzgerald drove in Maki Medici (Latham, NY/Shaker) for the second Utica run. Stevens bounced back to score the next three runs in the second and third innings to lead 3-2.

Utica erased the deficit in the bottom of the third. Kiernan Briggs (Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain) walked in a run, Pat Fitzgerald knocked in a run on a fielders' choice, and Chris Ramsundar delivered another score with a single as Utica nabbed the permanent lead, and Palmer's hit and the bullpen effort helped to mitigate the effect of a pair of Stevens runs scored later in the matchup.

Hardy got the win in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out three, and walked one. Joe Palmieri (West Islip, NY/West Islip) got his fourth save of the year.

The Pioneers totaled seven hits and overcame three errors. They left just three on base in the efficient victory.

Game 2: Stevens 18, Utica 6

Stevens built an 8-1 lead through the first four innings, and a four run seventh wasn't quite enough for the Pioneers to surmount a growing Ducks lead as Stevens salvaged the split with a twelve run victory.

Daryl Savage (Elmira, NY/Elmira) came in off the bench and had a big afternoon with two runs scored on two hits, and Ryan Mullholland pinch hit in the designated hitter spot and came in to go 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.

The Pioneers rapped out ten hits and left twelve runners on base. Freshman AJ Farina (Sherrill, NY/VVS) took the loss on the mound.
