UTICA, NY – The Utica College volleyball team is set to compete in the Oswego State Tournament this weekend hosted by Oswego. Friday's matchup will be at 6:00 p.m. against Oswego, Saturday's matches will take place at 11 a.m. against SUNY Canton, and 3 p.m. against Clarkson. All matches will take place at Oswego's Max Ziel Gymnasium.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers secured their first win on Monday over Cazenovia College by a final score of 3-2. The Pioneers rallied out of an 0-2 hole by winning the final three sets to take the road match. Three individuals displayed double-digit kills to chair the Utica attack efforts. Leading the way was sophomore
Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga) with 13, while
Rosemarie Fesko (Goshen, NY/Central) and
Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) each posted 11. Sophomores
Jenna Prewasnicak (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Casey Sims (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) combined for a total of 46 assists. Prewasnicak finished the match with 25 assists. Freshman Cameron Bohlert had the highest dig total of her young collegiate career with 37 of them.
LEADING THE WAY: Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) leads the Pioneers this season with 32 kills in eight matches. The attack opportunities have come from a balanced effort where
Rosemarie Fesko (Goshen, NY/Central) has compiled 29 kills, and
Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) has totaled 28. Cameron Bohlert has 98 digs in her career and will have an immediate opportunity to pass the century mark in that category. Alijca Swiechowska has fourteen blocks in her first year with the team.
SCOUTING OSWEGO: The Lakers are currently 4-3 on the season and have dropped their last two matches. Most recently, the Lakers trekked to the upper Midwest for a tournament at UW-Oshkosh. Oswego defeated Lawrence University in their only win of the weekend. The Lakers were defeated by UW Oshkosh, Carroll and UW Stout. Senior Sara Massie led the Lakers with six kills in a 3-0 loss to Carroll while Shauna O'Flaherty had eight kills and 11 digs against UW Stout. Friday's match marks the 31
st all-time meeting between Utica and Oswego. Melissa Lussier leads the Lakers overall with 43 kills. Oswego will meet Keuka on Wednesday in advance of this weekend's tournament.
SCOUTING CANTON: The Kangaroos are 0-8 on the year, and dropped a pair of matches in their most recent day of competition against Rochester and Nazareth at the Rochester Volleyball Invitational over the weekend. In a loss to Rochester, Marissa Ixtlahuac, Skye Hansen, and Melissa McMaster posted seven kills each, while teammate Jenna Roat came up with 23 digs. In a loss to Nazareth, Roat tacked on another 17 digs to her afternoon. McMaster earned four kills and Ixlahuac added 2 aces. Brynna Harris totaled seven assists and seven digs in the match against the Golden Flyers. Melissa McMaster has 45 kills this season for the Roos.
SCOUTING CLARKSON: The Golden Knights are 7-0 on the year with a recent weekend sweep in the North Country Invitational. They won 3-2 against Franklin and Marshall, 3-0 against Wheaton, and 3-0 against D'Youville College. Rachel Reasch leads the team with 76 kills. Isabelle Crow has 216 assists and is tied for 70
th in the nation in that category as a freshman.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers will embark on a seven match homestand that begins September 16
th against SUNY Poly. The Monday night dual match will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center.
