Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Gets Pair From Blumenstock in Win Over Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team is 5-0 for the first time since 1998. The Pioneers ventured up to face SUNY Potsdam on Friday night, and wiped out an early 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals as they topped the Bears by a 3-1 score at the Maxcy Turf Field.

The Pioneers received two goals from Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY/Poland) in the comeback effort, and added a third on an own goal by the Bears. Blumenstock recorded her first game-winning goal of the season and the seventh of her Utica career The Pioneers were outshot on the goal frame 10-5, but Allie Wagner made nine saves to improve her own record to 5-0 on the season.

The Pioneers had their longest shutout streak since the 1998 season come to a close in the victory, as they finally surrendered a goal to open play tonight after four straight clean sheets to start the season. The goal came in the 24th minute from Potsdam's Mackenzie Bowie as she scored at the 23:45 mark. Dating back to the Empire 8 Championship game last season, Utica ran together a shutout streak of 414:39, and has not been scored on in 314 days.

Potsdam's lid lifter marked the first time all season that the Pioneers have trailed, and Blumenstock was out to make sure it didn't last long. Utica's memory of a 1-0 deficit would be a short one, as Blumenstock pegged a shot into the back of the net just 43 seconds later to pull the Pioneers onto level ground.

The 1-1 score lasted until the 54th minute, when Utica went ahead on a miscue by their hosts. At 53:23, the Bears were the last to touch the ball on the way into their own net and were credited with an own goal. Utica nursed the slim one goal lead along through most of the second half. Wagner made six second half saves to preserve the slim advantage until Blumenstock scored her second in the 88th minute to tidy up the match as Utica took the 3-1 result. The latter goal was the fifth of the year for Blumenstock.

Both of Blumenstock's goals on the night were unassisted tallies. Utica has outscored opponents by a 14-1 margin so far this season.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, September 14th as they visit Clarkson. The match begins at 1 p.m. They will be chasing even more history, as no Pioneer women's soccer squad other than the 1998 team has ever started 6-0.
