Volleyball Set for Home Opener Against SUNY Poly

Utica, NY - The Utica College women's volleyball team is set for its home opener Monday night at 7 p.m. against SUNY Poly. This game is the first of a seven-game home stand for the Pioneers, who currently sit at 1-10 thus far in 2019.

Last time out: The Pioneers are coming off a 3-0 loss against Clarkson in the final match of the SUNY Oswego tournament. Freshman Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) was the catalyst for the Pioneers in this match, recording a team-high in both kills (6) and digs (11).

Comeback Win: UC notched its first win of the season last Monday against Cazenovia College. This was a match to remember, as the Pioneers clawed all the way back from a 2-0 deficit on the road. Sophomore Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga) led the way offensively for Utica, totaling a team-high 13 kills. Junior Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) and sophomore Rosemarie Fesko (Goshen, NY/Central) added 11 more kills in the effort. Freshman Cameron Boehlert (Utica, NY/Whitesboro ) was also a huge part of this win, as she added a match-high 27 digs. This match was a nailbiter from the beginning, with the largest margin of victory coming in the fifth and final set when the Pioneers took it by a score of 15-8.

Scouting Poly: The Wildcats have put together a 3-8 season so far in 2019, and have lost their last two matches heading into this one. SUNY Poly finished 2018 with a 14-17 record, and returned all but three players from last year's team.

Freshmen Dominance: The 2019 Pioneers have seen significant contributions from freshmen throughout the season. Freshman Cameron Boehlert (Utica, NY/Whitesboro ) may be the most impressive in this class, as she currently leads the team with 89 digs. Freshman Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) has been one of the offensive leaders, as she has the second-most kills on the team with 41.

Swiss Army Knife: Meaghan Romaguera (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout) has done it all for the Pioneers in 2019, as she has been the most consistent contributor across the board. Offensively, she leads the team with 43 kills and sits at second in digs with 64. Romaguera has also added four service aces as well, which leaves her tied for third most on the roster.

Up Next: The Pioneers stay at home to host the Hamilton College Continentals this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
