UTICA, NY- The Utica College field hockey team hits the road for the first time this season as it travels to SUNY Brockport on Wednesday for a non-conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brockport's Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers are coming off a 2-0 loss to the nationally ranked No. 14 Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester on Friday. The teams played over 30 minutes of scoreless action before the Yellowjackets were finally able to break through with a pair of second half goals. Sophomore goalie
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) finished with 17 saves on the day, just two off her career-high.
LEADING THE WAY: Junior
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) continues to lead the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Classmate
Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) is right behind Scaccia with four points of her own on one goal and two assists. Whitehouse had her seven-game scoring streak snapped on Friday, as she was held off the scoresheet for the first time since October 13th, 2018 in a loss to Washington and Jefferson. She had not been held without a point in a game in the last 340 days.
EMPIRE 8 WEEKLY AWARDS: Sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Chamberlain made 17 saves against No. 14 U of R on Friday to stand just two shy of her career high. For the season, she ranks third in the E8 with a .789 save percentage.
SECTION III INVASION: A plethora of athletes from the Central New York Area will be on display during Wednesday's matchup. Between the two rosters, a total of seventeen players that played for Section III high schools are due to suit up between Utica and Brockport.
SCOUTING BROCKPORT: The Golden Eagles are 4-2 on the year. They opened the season at 4-0, but have hit a two game skid with a pair of losses to Hartwick College and Cedar Crest College last weekend. Brockport lost 5-0 at the hands of Hartwick before getting dealt a 2-0 loss to Cedar Crest on Sunday. Brockport is capping off a three match homestand tonight. That homestand is part of a seven match opening stretch where the team has not left greater Rochester to play a game. Junior forward Katie Ziemba has eleven points on three goals and five assists so far this season. Freshman Megan Petersen is currently 3-0 in goal and is the reigning SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN EAGLES: The Pioneers topped the Golden Eagles by a 4-2 score last year in a match played at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY/Clinton) posted a hat trick for the Pioneers in the win, and
Josie Sgarlata (Canastota, NY/Canastota) added a fourth goal on a penalty corner to propel Utica to the non-conference win. Katie Ziemba and New York Mills native Alyssa Fuccillo had the goals for Brockport.
