BROCKPORT, NY- The Utica College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision to host SUNY Brockport in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers got on the board first at 32:49 when junior
Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) redirected a shot from senior
Josie Sgarlata (Canastota, NY/Canastota) off a corner for her team-leading third goal of the year.
The Golden Eagles evened the score at 46:02 when Katie Ziemba put in a rebound off a shot from Bailey Lazore for her fourth of the season.
Neither team was able to net the go-ahead in the final 14 minutes of play to result in Utica's first overtime game of the year. Brockport struck in the 64
th minute with the game-winner by Meaghan Lurz, who went in one-on-one with Utica goalie
Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury). Chamberlain made the first save, but Lurz fired in the rebound to seal the win for Brockport.
Chamberlain finished with 15 saves, while Cara Fox made eight saves for Brockport.
The Pioneers return home on Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against defending E8 champion, Washington & Jefferson College. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
