Women's Tennis Topped by Oswego

UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's tennis team was defeated by Oswego State on Sunday. The Pioneers notched a single point in singles action, but were on the receiving end of a clean sweep in doubles competition as they went on to an 8-1 defeat.

The Pioneers' lone point of the day went to newcomer Morgan Willis (), who went on to log an impressive three set victory at third singles. After falling behind 6-2 in the opening set, Willis powered by opponent Erin Vargo in the second set with a 6-0 dousing to set the table for her to clinch in a tight third set where she prevailed 7-5. Willis has won two of her last three singles opportunities.

Elsewhere on the court, the Pioneers put on some close displays to challenge the Lakers throughout the course of the match. Willis and doubles partner Madeline McIlnay (York, PA/York Suburban) had the strongest doubles performance of the day for Utica as they fell 8-4 against the Oswego tandem of Lorrayne Broach and Eliza Johnson at first doubles.

Singles action was highlighted by Bianca Bockhaus (Shenorock, NY/Somers), who snagged four gamepoints in the opening set against Lora Gould at fourth singles. Bockhaus would ultimately bow out 6-4, 6-2 during the afternoon's proceedings.

The Pioneers will be back on the court in pursuit of a second victory on Wednesday, September 25th as they pay a visit to SUNY Delhi for a non-conference match. Utica defeated the Broncos 8-1 earlier in the season as Utica swept the doubles and took all but one match in singles action. Wednesday's match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start in Delhi, NY.
