Utica, NY - The Utica College women's tennis team is set for a busy weekend, as it will kick off its four-game home stand by hosting Hamilton College on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Sage on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both of these matches will take place at the Utica College Tennis Courts.
Coming In Hot: Â The Utica College women's tennis team topped the SUNY Delhi Broncos by a score of 8-1 to notch its second win of the season on Wednesday night. The Pioneers took all six singles matches, with victories from seniors
Madeline McIlnay and
Bianca Bockhaus, freshmen
Morgan Willis (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury),
Camryn Sullivan and
Emily DePasquale (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent), as well as junior
Elma Selimovic. UC also won two of the three doubles matches, with Willis and Sullivan taking second doubles and Selimovic and Depasquale taking third doubles. This marked the Pioneers' second win of the year over Delhi, as they advanced to 2-5 thus far in 2019.
Where There's a Willis, There's a Way: Freshman
Morgan Willis (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) posted her first collegiate victory last weekend, topping Oswego's Erin Vargo in second singles (2-6, 6-0, 7-5).
Scouting Hamilton: The Continentals are a relatively young team, as they do not have a single senior on this year's roster. However, freshman Lauren Holtzman and sophomore Kat Roberts have compensated for the lack of experience with stellar play to start out their 2019 campaign. These two took home the 'A' flight doubles' crown in the Mary Hosking Invite to kick off the year, and holtzman came out on top of the 'A' flight singles bracket as well. Last weekend, this duo advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA Division III Women's Northeast Regional Championship before falling to Skidmore.
Scouting Sage: The Gators currently sit atop the Empire 8 with a 7-1 overall record. The sole loss of the season came in a neutral site contest against Western New England University, and they kicked off their Empire 8 conference schedule with a 6-3 win over Houghton last week. Sage is coming off a 5-8 season in 2018, but returns a wealth of talent and experience with six of the eight players on this year's team being upperclassmen.
Up Next: The Pioneers continue their four-game home stand this Wednesday, as they will host Medaille College at 3 p.m.
