UTICA, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team will travel to Hamilton College for the first time this year in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
HOT TEAM: The Pioneers increase their unbeaten streak to five games now, as they defeated St. John Fisher on Saturday by a final of 3-1. This moves Utica College into second place in the Empire 8, a spot they currently share with Elmira.
LAST TIME OUT: Utica secured their first conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. John Fisher by a final score of 3-1, which advanced their conference record 1-0-1 on the year. Freshman Jhonny Theze (Bronx, NY/Claremont International) continues to lead this Pioneers team offensively, scoring the first goal of the game and assisting the next two. Theze scored in the 15th minute and didn't look back as teammates Sean Weaver (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and Tucker Marvin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) followed suit later on in the contest.
KEY COMPONENTS: This Pioneer's offense continues to impress, as nine players now have recorded at least one goal and one assist on the year. Overall, the Pioneers have totaled 15 goals and assists as a team. Through nine games, Utica is outshooting their opponents with 138 shots compared to only 108 of its opponents.
SAVING THE DAY: Junior Randy Miksch (Lake Villa, IL/Warren Township) is having a highlight year for this Pioneers team. He recorded eight saves on nine shots on goal taken by Fisher. He is currently ranked first in goals against average with eight and leads the conference in both shutouts and saves with four shutouts and 44 saves. In conference play, he has only given up one goal thus far.
MAKING HISTORY: Since the Utica College men's soccer team originated back in 1992, they have never recorded four straight shutout victories, until this year.
SCOUTING HAMILTON: Hamilton is led by freshman Jefri Schmidt, who has two goals, four points and 12 shots on the year. Freshmen Sam Dils and Aidan Wood both share a goal each along with two points on the year.
HISTORY: Utica has faced Hamilton 26 times over the years but has only beat them once. Their only win came back in October of 2012 by a final score of 2-1. In their last three matchups, the Pioneers displayed great defense only allowing one goal in those three games.
LOOKING AHEAD: The Pioneers will host Elmira College in a conference matchup on Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
