UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's track and field team held the main session of its final home meet on Saturday. The Pioneers hosted their largest home meet field of the season as they took part in the Blue and Orange Invitational. Utica placed third in the team competition with 65 points with just the women's pentathlon remaining to be contested.
The day's headlining performance was a triple jump win by
Laura Meade (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville). She posted a new personal best in the event of 11.32 meters for an explosive improvement in the event. She has never exceeded eleven meters during her career. That mark will realistically vault her into the top 25 nationally, while also holding a dominant Empire 8 conference lead. She is less than a meter away from
Sarah Wiatr's (Poland, NY/West Canada Valley) school record. Meade also notched a personal best in the 60 meters at 8.16 seconds.
Also continuing her powerful start in the horizontal jumps was freshman
Kelsey Wands (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro). She recorded her fourth consecutive top six finish in the long jump, as she landed just off of her collegiate best with a 5.45 meter leap to place second. She entered the day in national qualifying position and is already the school's record holder in that event.
In the distance ranks, graduate student
Kaitlyn Stinson (South Kortright, NY/South Kortright Central School) turned in the third best time of her career in the 3,000 meters. She ran to a third place finish in a time of 10:51.34 and closed with a 40.5 second final lap in her last opportunity to compete as a collegian in the confines of the Hutton Dome.
The women's 500 meters produced a pair of top five performances for UC.
Laura Levi (Inlet, NY/Town of Webb) was fourth with a clocking of 1:25.52, with
Bryanna Mazzella (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro Central) right behind in fifth. Levi's time was her fastest at that distance this season.Â
In the sprints,
Eshone Cofield-Jackson (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) ran another personal best at 60 meters of 8.02 seconds. She placed in sixth of the finals in the event's championship section today.
The throws brought with them a terrific weight throw performance from senior
Brealle Brown (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta). In her final collegiate appearance at the Hutton Dome, Brown threw a mark of 13.82 meters to place in seventh amidst a highly talented field.
Katrina Cornick (Mason City, IA/Mason City) returned from a one-week layoff from competition with a 11.36 meter shot put mark that placed fourth.
Sunday's pentathlon will feature three competitors that Pioneer supporters will want to keep an eye on. Katelyn DiViccaro will be Utica's lone competitor from the active roster, and will be joined by assistant coaches
Claire Incantalupo and
Shayna Held in the field for the multi-event competition. The competition on Sunday begins at 10 a.m., and will be held in conjunction with the second session of the men's heptathlon.
