Women's Lacrosse Welcomes Wellesley this Weekend

UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's lacrosse team will continue its home stand on Saturday as it takes on Wellesley College in non-conference action. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
 
Last Time Out: Utica doubled up SUNY Canton in an 18-9 home win on Wednesday… Nine different players scored at least one goal for UC… Sophomore Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) led the way with six goals and two assists… Teammate Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) added three goals and one assist of her own… Seniors Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) and Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) also contributed two goals… Sophomore Claire Frier (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) had a career-high 14 saves in 38 minutes of work.   
 
Home Cooking: Utica's roster features 10 players from the Mohawk Valley, providing a local flare for the Pioneers… Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), Cameron Boehlert (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), Addison Green (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), Danielle Stay (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), Samantha Decondo, and Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) all played at nearby Whitesboro High School, while Katherine Migliori (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) is from Rome, NY, and Emily Rossi (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) hail from Verona, NY… This group has combined for 25 of the Pioneers' 32 goals scored so far this year. 
 
Scores A-Lot Scaccia: Just two games into the 2020 season, Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) has reached a total of 15 points on the season, scoring 11 goals and adding four assists… Currently, Scaccia leads her squad offensively with team-bests in goals, points, and draw controls (16)... She is also tied for the team-lead in assists… After just two games, Scaccia leads the Empire 8 Conference in goals per game (5.50), points per game (7.50), and draw controls per game (8.0).
 
How About Husnay: Junior Stephanie Husnay (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) is second on the squad with nine points, on seven goals and two assists… She also leads the team with seven ground balls… The 2018 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year has totaled 97 points (54 goals, 43 assists) in 36 games for Utica.
 
Points for Palmer: Senior Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, NY/VVS) is third on the team with seven points this season and she is also second on the squad with 10 draw controls… Palmer, who transferred to Utica following her freshman year, needs 10 more points to reach the 100-point mark at UC.
 
How May I Assist you?: Junior Lauren Wolff (Peabody, MA/Peabody) is tied for the team-lead with four assists on the year and she ranks fourth on the team in scoring with six points… She recently moved into fourth place in the College's record books with 44 career assists… She needs just four more to movie into a tie for third place all-time. 
 
In the Crease: Utica's goalie depth has proven to be another strength for the Pioneers this year… Both Hali Vandermeulen (Walden, NY/Valley Central) and Claire Frier (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) rank in the top-five in the conference in both goals against average and save percentage… Frier currently leads the E8 with a .778 save percentage and she is second in goals against average (6.41) after her breakout showing on Wednesday… Vandermeulen meanwhile is fourth in save percentage (.520) and fifth in goals against average (8.72).
  
Scouting Wellesley: The Blue come into the contest with a 1-1 overall record after winning 12-5 against Wentworth on Wednesday… Junior Kat Gallison and sophomore Izzy Burdick lead the team with seven points apiece… Burdick has a team-leading six goals, while Gallison is right behind her with five goals so far.
 
Battling the Blue: Utica played at Wellesley College back in 2017 but came up just short in a final 12-7 decision... The hosts led a balanced attack, scoring six goals in each half… UC was led offensively by Katlyn Scarpinella (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) who posted a game-high three assists… Then a freshman, Hailee DuMont (Wilkes-Barre, PA/James M. Coughlin) recorded the second goal of her collegiate career in the loss… In goal, Vandermeulen made 11 saves in her fourth collegiate appearance.
 
Looking Ahead: The Pioneers will hit the road on Wednesday to face Morrisville State in non-conference play… Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
