ALFRED, NY - Entering Saturday's game, the Utica men's soccer team and the Alfred Saxons were tied in the Empire 8 standings at 2-2. The Pioneers earned a huge win by defeating the Saxons on the road, 1-0, to break the tie in the standings.
The only goal of the game came in the 20th minute off the foot of
Byamungu Mugushu (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) with the assist from
Ramazani Juma (Utica, NY/Proctor).
Utica outshot Alfred 19-11 in the game including five from Juma, four from Mugushu and three from
Austin McCarthy (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro). In goal,
Foti Xidias (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) pitched his third shutout of the season while also recording three saves.
Both teams drew 10 fouled while also receiving one yellow card each.
UC (6-5-1, 3-2 Empire 8) returns to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20 against Keuka College. This will be the one of two remaining home games left for the Pioneers.
