UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team earned a thrilling 70-67 overtime win over SUNY Oneonta Tuesday evening on Miga Court at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center.
Both
Cora Sawyer (New London, CT/New London) and
Krissy Geraci (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) finished with double-doubles, with Sawyer finishing with 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds, while Geraci tied for the team-lead with 16 points and added 10 boards. This marked new career-highs for Sawyer.
Both teams traded points in the first half, but it was the Pioneers to took a narrow 27-25 lead into halftime. The third quarter was more of the same, with back-and-forth action. Oneonta sunk a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining in the quarter to put the visitors on top by one. However, a buzzer-beating three-pointer by
Brigid Johndrow (Bristol, CT/St. Paul Catholic) swung the momentum back in Utica's favor.
Oneonta held a 59-55 lead with 2:05 remaining, but timely buckets by
Petrina DeMarco (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) turned the tides back in favor of the Pioneers. DeMarco, who had been relatively quiet up until that point sunk a huge three-pointer, just her second of the year, with 1:11 remaining to put the Pioneers on top by one. DeMarco sunk a layup with 17.9 seconds remaining in regulation to give Utica some wiggle room. Oneonta evened with 10 seconds remaining thanks to a three by Nadia Brown, who finished with 10 points on the evening.
The Pioneers wore down the Red Dragons in the extra frame, leading by six points with 1:47 remaining. Oneonta had a chance to tie it with five seconds remaining but their three-point attempt was no good as Utica held on to win.
Johndrow tied Geraci for the team-lead with 16 points on the evening, including 7-of-10 shooting on free throws, and she also dished out a team-high six assists.
Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while DeMarco had 10 points to her credit.
With the win, Utica improves to 3-0 and will look to carry its momentum into a non-conference contest against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
