ONEONTA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team had its season come to an end Tuesday as it fell in the first round of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament to host Hartwick College by a score of 4-1.
The Hawks opened the scoring at 9:03 as Gianna Cacciola put in a centering cross from Grace Byrne for her fifth of the year to give Hartwick the early 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same until early in the second half. The Pioneers came out of the break flying and were rewarded just 1:28 into the second half as senior
Ro Hernandez (Carmel, NY/Kennedy Catholic) followed her own rebound and buried her team-leading 10
th of the season.
Cacciola found the back of the net again in the 61
st minute as she fired a shot from the top of the box that tucked inside the left post.
The Hawks struck back-to-back goals just 1:37 apart in the 80
th and 81
st minutes, one by Cacciola and one by Byrne to all but seal the victory.
Utica's
Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) finished with 10 saves in the loss, while Sara Staup made three saves for Hartwick.
The Pioneers, who made their fourth straight E8 Tournament appearance, wrap up the year with an 8-8-1 overall record.
