Pioneers Take Seventh Straight Season Opener in Win Over Delhi

DELHI, NY - After 617 days since its last game, the Utica College women's basketball team showed no signs of rust in its 86-37 season opening win over the SUNY Delhi Broncos. The win marks seven consecutive seasons in which the Pioneers have won its season opener. 
 
The Broncos held the lead for a total of 12 seconds in the game, coming with 9:09 left to play in the first quarter to 8:57 remaining with a 2-0 lead. Cora Sawyer (New London, CT/New London) was the one to even the game at two on a layup and set up the Pioneers' offensive explosion. 
 
Utica went on to take a 29-15 lead into the second quarter before the team's defense took over the show. UC held Delhi to two points over the second quarter as the Broncos shot just 1-for-18 from the field. Julianna Beaulieu (Chicopee,MA/Chicopee Comprehensive) and Sydney Przygoda (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) combined for 13 of the team's 16 second quarter points to help guide UC to a 45-17 lead at the break. 
 
Delhi displayed much more offensive in the third quarter however, Utica still came away with a 19-14 advantage in the quarter. Eight different Pioneers recorded points in the quarter, six of which coming from the charity stripe. 
 
The defense led the way once again in the fourth quarter, this time holding the Broncos to six points over the 10 minutes. The UC offense, led by Przygoda's eight, totaled 22 in the quarter to help come away with a win in the season opener. 
 
The Pioneers held the Broncos to 25.9% shooting from the field throughout the game while also limiting them the 1-for-7 from three. Utica also held an 87-29 advantage in rebounds over Delhi while shooting 33% from the floor. 
 
Przygoda finished with a 19 point, 11 rebound double-double in her season debut while both of those marks were team highs. The senior was extremely effective from the floor, shooting 7-for-9 on the afternoon. Beaulieu totaled 14 points and eight rebounds while going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Sawyer went on to finish with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting as well as coming away with nine rebounds while teammate Julia Rotando (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) finished the afternoon with eight points and nine boards. Hannah Stack (Dogleville, NY/Dolgeville) also came down with nine rebounds as a part of the team's total of 87.  
 
UC (1-0) will play next when it opens home at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 against Alfred St.
