UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's hockey team got back on track Saturday as it topped visiting Castleton University 5-1 in non-conference action to salvage the weekend split. Four different players scored for Utica in the win.
The Pioneers got on the board at 13:45 of the first when sophomore
Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) buried a feed from classmate
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) for her first of the season. Junior
Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) forced a turnover behind the Castleton net. Sloan scooped up the loose puck and dished it in front to a wide open Rylott to give Utica the early lead.
UC added an insurance tally with just 1:12 remaining in the opening period as sophomore
Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) put in a rebound as she was falling down for her first of the year. Freshman
Alexa Carlon (Lakewood, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) notched her first collegiate point with an assist on Whitney's goal, while
Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) was also credited with a helper.
Utica added to its lead just over five minutes into the second stanza as Sloan netted one of her own. Sloan took a long pass from Santullo and went in one-on-one with a Castleton defender. After a great deke to get around the defender, she slid the puck between the legs of Spartan goalie Jessie Foote to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team. Whitney also picked up an assist on Sloan's first of the year.
Freshman
Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) made it 4-0 at 8:17 of the second as she redirected a point shot by
Lindsey Winter (Minneapolis, MN/Armstrong Cooper) for her second of the season.
Sirena Fitzery (Hamburg, NY/Buffalo Bisons) also picked up an assist on the fourth Pioneer tally.
Castleton pulled Foote in favor of Kirsten DiCicco to try to slow the momentum. It appeared to help as the Spartans got one back at 9:35 when Darby Palisi netted a power play tally off assists from Katherine Campoli and Casey Traill.
Utica responded however at 15:47 of the second as Stefanini put in her second of the night and third of the weekend on the power play to cap off the scoring. Freshman
Cortney Staniszewski (Buffalo, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) picked up an assist for her first career point and Whitney also added a helper.
Freshman
Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) was rock solid in her first collegiate start, stopping 26-of-27 shots she faced to pick up her first career win.
The Pioneers (1-1) return to action on Friday as they host Manhattanville to open up UCHC play. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
