UTICA, NY - The Utica College men's ice hockey team snagged a second straight win on Saturday. The Pioneers got a goal in each of three periods, and
Sean Dickson (Millbrae, CA/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL-Premier)) did the rest with a 24 save shutout as Utica topped visiting Chatham by a 3-0 score at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Utica improves to 2-1 and mirrors the same record in UCHC play. The Cougars fall to 2-4, and 2-2 in the UCHC.
The shutout was the third of Dickson's career, as the junior netminder was perfect for the afternoon. Senior forward
Brett Everson (Mississauga, Ontario/Hawkesbury (CCHL)) led the Utica attack with a goal and an assist.
Brandon Osmundson (Chesapeake, VA/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL)) and
Buster Larsson (Bunkeflostrand, Sweden/Syracuse Stars (NCDC)) added the other Pioneer goals, while
John Moncovich (Wilmington, NC/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL)),
Dante Zapata (Huntington Beach, CA/Austin Bruins (NAHL)),
Regen Cavanagh (Chesapeake, VA/Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)),
Conor Landrigan (New Tripoli, PA/Binghamton Jr. Sens (NAHL)) and
Justin Allen (Rochester, NY/Rochester Monarchs (USPHL-NCDC)) each had assists.
Chatham goaltender Ricardo Gonzalez was solid in the loss for the visiting team with a 35 save performance.
Utica outshot the Cougars 38-24, and the Pioneers finished 1-of-4 on the power play while delivering a firm penalty kill performance at 3-for-3.
The Pioneers cashed in on a first period power play to snag the lead at 10:01 of the first period.
Brett Everson (Mississauga, Ontario/Hawkesbury (CCHL)) continued his sizzling start to the season with his third goal of the season as he tipped a long shot from Junior defenseman
Justin Allen (Rochester, NY/Rochester Monarchs (USPHL-NCDC)).
Regen Cavanagh (Chesapeake, VA/Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)) added the other assist on the play as Utica held a 1-0 lead through the first period.
A 2-0 lead presented itself to Utica at 13:24 of the second period when
Buster Larsson (Bunkeflostrand, Sweden/Syracuse Stars (NCDC)) had an opportunity to score off a Chatham turnover. After the initial shot slid away, Larsson finished on his second opportunity on the counter attack to propel Utica to a 2-0 lead. Everson and Zapata notched the assists.
The Pioneers fended off multiple Cougar power play chances as their 2-0 lead held well into the third period, but the margin left Utica desiring a bit more insurance to put the game away. With Chatham threatening to pull Gonzalez in the final minutes for the extra attacker, Utica turned in its best shift of the night which not only prevented the Goalie Pull, but also delivered an insurance strike. Moments after
Brandon Osmundson (Chesapeake, VA/Hampton Roads Whalers (USPHL)) kept the shift alive with a brilliant hustle play to collect a loose puck in the right circle, the sophomore was rewarded with his third goal of the season as he iced the game at 3-0 with just 36 seconds left to play. Moncovich extended his point streak to five games, while Landrigan extended his to nineteen straight with the assists.
The Pioneers are scheduled to play Manhattanville in Elmsford, NY on Sunday. Puck drop is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Westchester Skating Academy.
