Softball Earns Sweep in Season-Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORRISVILLE, NY- In its first game action in nearly 23 months, the Utica College softball team wasted little time getting back to its winning ways as it swept Morrisville State 9-0 and 5-1 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday evening.  Junior Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Pioneers.
 
Utica 9, Morrisville 0- Game One Final (5 Inn.)
Utica scored at least one run in each inning to come away with the run-rule victory.  Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) was 2-for-2 in game one with three RBIs and one run scored.  Senior Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) was 1-for-2 with a team-high three runs scored.  She also had one steal.  Madison Akots (Wynantskill, NY/Emma Willard School) and Julia Phelps (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa High School) each had one hit and drove in two. 
 
Bailey McElwain (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Baker High School), Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland), Megan O'Keefe (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central), and Adrian Duvall (Lisbon, NY/Lisbon Central School) also had hits for Utica.  Phelps and Abbigayle Finch (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) totaled one steal each. Jordyn Conte (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley High School) gave up just one hit and struck out eight in her collegiate debut.  Chyne Kennedy and Mackenzie Braun combined for four strikeouts for the Mustangs.
 
Utica 5, Morrisville 1- Game Two Final (5 Inn.)
Utica kept its momentum rolling into game two as Sara Stransky (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) had an RBI single in the top of the first to give the Pioneers the early lead.  Morrisville responded in the bottom half of the inning when Chyne Kennedy singled to plate one.
 
The score remained the same until the fourth inning when Abbigayle Finch (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) hit an RBI single to put the Pioneers back on top.  Utica got some insurance in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run home run by Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland)Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) capped off the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth inning before the game was called due to darkness.
 
Joss and Stransky went 2-for-3 in game two while Megan O'Keefe (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) also had a hit. Senior Gabriella Caccamo (Suffern, NY/Suffern) fanned four an allowed just three hits to earn the win.
 
The Pioneers (2-0) have a busy weekend as the are scheduled host both SUNY Poly and Cazenovia College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.  Saturday's doubleheader is slated to start at 11 a.m. at Greenman Field.
