Walk-Off Dooms UC in Game 1, Roeschlaub Shines in Game 2

Keuka Park, NY - The Utica College baseball team split Tuesday's doubleheader with the Keuka Wolves. Keuka took game one 7-6 on a walk-off double before the Pioneers struck back for a lopsided 14-0 win in the second game.

Game 1
The Wolves got to Pioneers starter Daniel Parslow (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) early in the game. Back-to-back hits in the 1st inning gave Keuka a 1-0 advantage. A wild pitch in the 2nd inning brought home Brady Booher from third base to extend Keuka's lead to 2-0.

UC took its first lead of the game in the 3rd inning. Matthew Leviton (South River, NJ/South River) brought home John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) on a single to right field to make it a 2-1 game. Two batters later, Matthew Fitzgerald (Clinton, NY/Notre Dame) evened the score on a sacrifice fly while an error on the play brought home Joe Battista (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) to give the Pioneers a 3-2 edge.

The Wolves went on to score four runs between the 3rd and 5th innings to carry a 6-3 lead into the 6th. Parslow's day ended after the 5th as he allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits to go with three strikeouts.

The Utica offense let Parslow off the hook in the 6th and 7th innings as the team mounted a comeback to even the score. John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) ripped a two RBI single in the 6th inning to bring the Pioneers within one while Michael Muentener (Fairview, NJ/Cliff Side Park) doubled home Leviton in the 7th to tie the game 6-6.

The comeback did not last, however. Keuka took advantage of a leadoff double by Josh Tyron as the next batter, Dave Verrett, htt a walk-off double to give the Wolves the 7-6 win.

Son finished the game 2-for-2 with two walks and a pair of RBIs. Muentener finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Battista and Leviton also had two-hit games.

Game 2
Everything clicked for the Pioneers in game two as the team cruised to a 14-0 win to salvage a split in the series.

Beyond the offensive outburst, James Roeschlaub (Auburn, NY/Auburn HS) was the story of the game. He pitched a complete game shutout while carrying a no-hitter into the 6th innings. Roeschlaub allowed  three hits in his seven innings while striking out a career high 14 batters on his way to picking up his first win as a member of the Pioneers.

John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) gave UC an early 3-0 on a three run home run in the top of the 1st inning. Jason Story (Hilton, NY/Hilton HS) singled home another run to make it a 4-0 game going into the 2nd inning.
UC compiled six more runs between the 4th and 6th innings before giving Roeschlaub some more insurance runs. Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) singled home a run which was followed  by a sacrifice fly by Story to make it an 11-0 game. Shamariah McCullough (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) pushed a run across on a fielders choice before Cardone came around to score on a balk, giving UC a decisive 13-0 lead going into the final inning.

Son scored once more when Noah Barber (Cortland, NY/Cortland) hit into a double play in the 7th inning to put the Pioneers ahead 14-0. Roeschlaub was able to escape the home half without any harm to preserve the shutout and the 14-0 Utica win.

Son finished game two 3-for-4 with six RBIs while Barber and Story recorded two RBIs with each having one hit. Besides Son, Sean Vanegas (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael) was the only other UC hitter with multiple hits, finishing game two 2-for-3.
