UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team earned a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting SUNY Potsdam in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
Â
Both teams traded chances in the first half, but neither was able to break through as the teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.
Â
Potsdam had its best look with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation as Margaret Crosson hit the post from 10 yards out. The rebound came right to Makenna Crosson, but her shot sailed over the bar, much to the delight of the Utica faithful. Then, with less than 11 minutes remaining, the Bears were awarded an indirect free kick in the box, but the Utica wall held strong to make the clear.Â
Â
Utica finally broke the deadlock with 8:04 remaining as sophomore
Kaela Mochak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) fired a howitzer from 35 yards out that tucked under the crossbar for her first of the season.
Â
Sophomore
Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) made three saves for her first shutout of the year, while Potsdam's Chloe Gordon also finished with three saves.
Â
The Pioneers (3-1) remain home Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play against Houghton College. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
