Women's Tennis Prepares for Jam-Packed Week

UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's tennis team will prepare for a busy week that includes four matches, three of which at home. UC will host Sage on September 15 at 3:30 p.m., future Empire 8 opponent Medaille College on September 17 at 4 p.m., St. John Fisher on September 18 at 1 p.m. and will wrap up the week at Nazareth on September 19 at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out: UC dropped its season-opening match to Houghton College on Saturday, 7-2. Utica's only wins came from Ellen Lyga (New Hartford, NY/Notre Dame) in first singles, 6-2 and 6-0, and Haley Dekin (Castorland, NY) in sixth singles, 6-0 and 7-5.

The Streak Continues: Dating back to last season, Lyga has now won eight straight matches. Even more impressive, Lyga has done so without allowing an opponent to record more than two points against her. The Notre Dame graduate will look to keep her streak alive during this busy week for the team.

Scouting Sage: The Gators opened its season with a 5-4 loss to Castleton on September 5. Maddie Cherry, Taylor Gillespie and Kenedy Cherry put Sage ahead 3-0 by taking the first three singles matches. However, Sage went on to drop the next three while only picking up one doubles win courtesy of Maddie Cherry and Gillespie. This match will be considered a non-conference meeting between the two Empire 8 teams.

Future Conference Foe: Medaille College comes into the week 1-1 and will have a match against Nazareth prior to the meeting with Utica. The Mavericks swept La Roche University 9-0 on Saturday before losing 7-2 to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Arianna Lysiak is 2-0 in singles play while Jasmine Mott and Hallie Dworzanski are 2-0 in doubles.

First Time With Fisher: St. John Fisher will travel to Utica on Saturday with a 1-2 (0-1 E8) record. The Cardinals dropped its first two matches of the year to Brockport, 7-2, and Hartwick, 5-4, before defeating Oswego St. on Sunday afternoon, 5-4.

About Nazareth: Nazareth is 1-1 (1-0 E8) this season and will play a pair of games during the week before hosting UC on Sunday. The Golden Flyers lost to Geneseo 7-2 on September 1 before defeating Alfred University on Saturday, 7-2. Aliya Guzman leads the team with a 3-1 record in singles while as a team they have gone 3-13 in doubles play.
