Upperclassmen Guide Utica to Win Over Brockport

UTICA, NY- Four different players scored as the Utica College field hockey team downed visiting SUNY Brockport 4-2 in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

Utica opened the scoring at 22:45 when graduate student Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) netted her second of the season.  Whitehouse had a great run to get past two Brockport defenders.  With one to beat, she went wide and drilled a shot on goal just before the end line that bounced of the Brockport goalie and snuck its way over the line.

Utica added an insurance tally five minutes later as Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) put in a rebound off a shot by Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) for her career-best fourth goal of the year.

It appeared that UC took a 3-0 lead less than a minute into the second half, but the goal was called back and Brockport used a quick start to get behind the Utica defense on a fast break.  Gianna Salerno fed Bailey Lazore who dished it into the wide-open net for her second of the season.

Utica again took a two-goal lead, this time in the 35th minute when Scaccia netted her second of the year off a feed from Madeline Krecidlo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro).  Krecidlo then gave Utica some breathing room as she put in a loose ball in front for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.  Freshman Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) was credited with an assist on the play.

Brockport did not go down without a fight as Salerno netted one of her own with 7:13 remaining to make it 4-2 in favor of the home team.

Senior Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) made six saves in net, while Emma Acevedo had five saves for the Golden Eagles.

The Pioneers return to action Friday as they travel to Keuka College.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
