Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pioneers Fall Short In Rain-Soaked Battle vs Poly

UTICA, NY - With rain falling throughout the duration of the game, the Utica College men's soccer team was outdueled by crosstown rival SUNY Poly on Wednesday afternoon, 1-0.

Both sides failed to score in the first period as the Pioneers created seven shot opportunities while the Wildcats were held to two. The Utica midfield and defense helped keep the ball in the offensive zone for much of the period while preventing Poly the chance to create separation.

The game's first and only goal came in the 59th minute following a Utica foul. Noah Fagnani of SUNY Poly was able to head in the indirect kick from Peyton Bennett from a few yards out to take the 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers attempted nine shots in the second period and had four corner kicks; however, a few wide shots would be the closest the team would get to the back of the net as SUNY Poly escaped with a 1-0 win.

Sory Konate (Harlem, NY/Forsyth Satellite Academy) attempted four of UC's 16 shots while Ramazani Juma (Utica, NY/Proctor) finished with three attempts. Gian Rodriguez (Tenerife, Spain/Northwood), Cody Baker-Green (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and Jacob Sherline (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each attempted two. Colin McCarthy (Vestal, NY/Vestal), Patrick Hynes (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem), Colin Lewis (Claremont, NH/Kimball Union Academy) and Kamer Lenio (Brighton, NY/Brighton) each played large parts in the early success of the defense. In goal, Foti Xidias (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) recorded two saves on seven Wildcat shot attempts.

UC (3-4-1, 0-1 E8) is off until October 2 when they host Elmira College at noon.
