Volleyball Outduels Keuka for First Conference Win This Season

KEUKA PARK, NY - Another game, another close contest for the Utica College volleyball team as it pulled out a 3-2 win over the Keuka Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

The teams swapped wins through each set with UC taking the first and third 25-22 and Keuka coming away with the second and the fourth 25-21. Down 5-4 in the fifth set, the Pioneers scored five unanswered to go up 9-5 thanks to kills by Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names), Peyton Migliaccio (Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga) and two aces by Hannah Johnson (Murfreesboro, TN/Blackman). The Wolves climbed back in and wouldn't back away as the teams swapped points until the score was even at 13.

Utica wouldn't allow this match to slip away, however. Madison Maggiore (Orangeburg, NY/Tappan Zee) assisted a kill from Cepiel and Brianna Woods (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finished the set and the game with a kill of her own for the Pioneers to pull away with its first Empire 8 win of the season and its first true road win of the year.

Eleanor Cepiel (West Sand Lake, NY/Academy of Holy Names) led UC with 15 kills, followed by Brianna Woods (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) with 10 and Kurstan Martin (Owego, NY/Tioga) with 8. Krystell Pappas (Owensboro, KY/Owensboro) led the way with 22 digs with Madison Maggiore (Orangeburg, NY/Tappan Zee) behind her with 21, Maggiore also led the team with 23 assists. Lainey Hayden (Owensboro, KY/Owensboro) totaled five blocks while Woods finished with four and Peyton Migliaccio (Suffern, NY/Suffern) had two.

UC (4-10, 1-1 Empire 8) are back home on October 1 when Cazenovia travels into town for a 7 p.m. game.
