Strong Second Half Guides Utica to Comeback Win Over Oswego

UTICA, NY- Graduate student Sydney Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) scored the game-winner with just 5:31 remaining as the Utica College field hockey team knocked off visiting Oswego State 4-3 in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

Utica outshot the visitors 13-5 in the second half and used three goals in the final 24 mintues of play to come away with the victory.

Oswego opened the scoring at 21:15 as Nancy Pagliaroli netted her sixth of the year off an assist by Jenna Rogers on a penalty corner.

Utica responded just 1:06 later when the Pioneers were also awarded a penalty corner.  After an initial shot by Jeslyn Files (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) was blocked, she picked up her rebound then rifled a shot from seven yards out for her second of the season.

Oswego got back on top with 2:48 remaining before the half when Kacie Simzer found the back of the net for her sixth of the year.

Utica's halftime adjustments were quickly rewarded at 36:31 as the Pioneers once again tied it up.  This time off the stick of Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) as she banged home a pass by Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) for her team-leading 11th goal of the year. Just 3:12 later, Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) gave Utica its first lead when she caged her sixth of the year.  Emily Frank (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) was credited with an assist on the go-ahead.

The Lakers would not go down without a fight, however, as Kaitlyn Mastracco was able to beat Utica goalie Megan Chamberlain (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) for her team-best 11th of the season.

UC's sustained pressure over the final 20 minutes finally paid off with Scaccia's first game-winner this season.

Chamberlain turned aside six shots in the win, while her counterpart, Erica Scheblein, had 12 saves.

The Pioneers (5-4) return to action Saturday as they travel to Medaille.  Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
