ROCHESTER, NY - An eventful second half paired with two late goals drew the Utica University women's soccer team and the St. John Fisher Cardinals at 2-2 on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers and Cardinals fared even in the first half as neither side could produce a score. Fisher wound up with a 5-4 edge in shots while Utica held a 2-1 shot on goal advantage thanks to early looks by
Jenna Keeman (Douglas, MA/Douglas) and
Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville ) within the first 16 minutes.
Things began to heat up in the final 45 minutes.
Julianna Beaulieu (Chicopee,MA/Chicopee Comprehensive) found
Ro Hernandez (Carmel, NY/Kennedy Catholic) for her league-leading seventh goal and 18th point of the season in the 54th minute for a 1-0 lead. About five minutes later, Fisher evened the score on a penalty kick while from there, the score remained tied entering the 80th minute.
Midway through the 83rd minute, the Cardinals were able to take their first lead of the night on what seemed to be the game-winner. However, Lamphere had other plans. Just over one minute following Fisher's go-ahead tally, Beaulieu found Lamphere for the equalizer for the freshman's fifth goal of the season and Beaulieu's fourth assist. Lamphere took one more look in the 89th minute but the shot tailed wide and the teams settled for a draw.
Utica and Fisher finished even in the shot department with 12 each while the Pioneers totaled seven on goal, led by Keeman and Lamphere with two each, to the Cardinals' six. In goal,
Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) made four saves for Utica.
Utica (3-6-3, 1-1-2 Empire 8) returns home on Saturday at 1 p.m. to take on Elmira College from Pioneer field.
