ROCHESTER, NY - The Utica University women's soccer team fell to the Nazareth College Golden Flyers this afternoon in the Empire 8 Women's Soccer Championship 1-0.
The first shot attempt of the game didn't come until midway through the 7th minute when Haley Glassman of Nazareth fired one wide while Utica's first shot of the afternoon came in the 17th minute off the foot of
Rylee Lamphere (Little Falls, NY/Dolgeville) who missed to the right.
The Golden Flyers had a 5-3 shot advantage before the team's sixth shot in the 34th minute found the back of the net to go ahead 1-0. The Pioneers had two more looks in the half but both shots were off net as Nazareth hung on to take its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Still trailing 1-0 through the first eight minutes of the second half, Utica attempted three shots between the 54th and 59th minutes while the first two were saved by Golden Flyers goalkeeper Annika Monfort. While the Pioneers had three more scoring opportunities the team could not break through as Nazareth held on to win the conference title 1-0.
Lamphere led the team with four shots while
Kaela Mochak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) and
Ro Hernandez (Carmel, NY/Kennedy Catholic) attempted two each. Overall, Nazareth finished with a 14-11 shot advantage while Utica forced three corner kicks to the Golden Flyers' two. In goal for the Pioneers,
Courtney Connolly (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) made three saves.
Utica ends its season with an 8-8-4 overall record while having reached its fourth Empire 8 championship in the last five seasons.
