Utica Falls to Geneseo and St. Lawrence in Florida

CLERMONT, FL - The Utica University softball team fell to SUNY Geneseo and St. Lawrence University on Thursday.

Utica 1, SUNY Geneseo 2 - Final
Utica and Geneseo were in the midst of a pitcher's duel through the first four innings of play. Still 0-0 in the top of the 5th inning, the Pioneers jumped on the board first. Abriana Wadley (Utica, NY/Proctor) led off the frame with a triple down the left field line and during the next at-bat, crossed home on a wild pitch to put Utica up 1-0.

Conte went on to retire the side in the Geneseo half of the 5th and 6th, setting up a 1-0 Pioneers lead entering the 7th. After Utica was set down in the visiting half, Geneseo started the home half with a bunt single to third. Later with bases loaded and one away, the Knights evened the game on an error by shortstop Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), leaving the bases loaded following the play.

Geneseo then walked-off the game on the next batter on a single to right field. Conte pitched all 6.2 innings allowing two runs, none earned, on seven hits. Utica's offense totaled six hits, one each by Julia Phelps (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa High School), Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland), Alyssa Barbato (Rhinebeck, NY/Rhinebeck ), Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls), Abigail Sacks (Colonie, NY/Colonie) and Wadley.

Utica 3, St. Lawrence University 4 - Final
Kylie Murray (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester ) started the game for Utica and surrendered an early run to the Saints in the top of the 1st inning on an RBI single.

St. Lawrence tacked on two more runs in the top of the 3rd inning before the Pioneers responded in the home half. Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) hit into an RBI groundout to the pitcher while Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland) drove home a run on a single to center to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Saints immediately responded in the 4th thanks to a passed ball which allowed the runner from third to score to go ahead 4-2.

Now in the bottom of the 7th, Utica attempted to mount a comeback. Julia Phelps (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa High School) doubled with two outs and was then driven home by Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) to make it a 4-3 game. With Paul now on second base and two away, Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland) grounded out to short to end the game.

Murray hurled all seven innings allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits while chalking up six strikeouts. The Paul sisters led Utica with two hits each and drove in each of the team's three runs; two by Lauren and one off the bat of Kaitlyn.

Utica (2-6) concludes its Florida trip on Friday with a pair of games in Leesburg. The Pioneers will take on Plattsburgh State at 2:45 p.m. before a 5 p.m. game against Stockton University.
