RPI Hands Women's Lax First Loss of Season

UTICA, NY- The Utica University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday as it fell to visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 14-9.

Utica drops to 4-1 on the year, while RPI improves to 5-2.  The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday as they host SUNY Canton.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Engineers were consistent throughout the game as they used seven goals in each half to come away with the win.  Utica kept the game close int eh first half, trailing by one with under a minute to go, but an RPI goal with 16 seconds remaining gave the visitors a 7-5 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was more of the same.  Utica used back-to-back unassisted goals from Lexi Scaccia (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Addison Green (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) to bring the Pioneers within one.  But a pair of goals by the visitors in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter gave RPI a three-goal cushion.  The Engineers opened the fourth with three straight goals in the first four minutes to all but seal the victory.

Scaccia and Samantha DeCondo (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each had two goals, while graduate student Ashley Guerra (Ionia, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima ) had a team-high three points on one goal and two assists.  Green also had a multi-point game as she chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Emily Rossi (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Daniela Muscari (Millbrook, NY/Millbrook), and Katie Crofoot (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) each had one goal in the loss.  Scaccia led Utica with three caused turnovers and tied Aana Blaszka (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) for the team-lead with four ground balls each.
