SCHENECTADY, NY- The Utica University softball team dropped a pair of game to Union College on Wednesday. Utica fell 11-3 in game one and 13-3 in game two, both games wrapped up in six innings.
Utica 3, Union 11- Game One Final
The teams each traded a pair of runs in the first inning with Utica's tallies coming off a two-RBI single by
Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland). The score remained the same for next two innings, but Union scored three runs in each of the last three innings to take a commanding lead. The Pioneers were able to plate one in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little, too late.
Paul led the way in game one going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland),
Emily Joss (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls),
Abigail Sacks (Colonie, NY/Colonie), and
Brooke Catlin (Brewerton, NY/Central Square High School) each had one hit.
Kylie Murray (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester ) shouldered the loss for Utica, while Amanda Granato picked up the win for the Dutchwomen.
Utica 3, Union 13- Game Two Final
The second game started out similar to the first, with Union, the designated visiting team, scoring in the top of the first, but the Pioneers responding in the bottom of the inning to even the score. Utica's opening run came off the bat of freshman
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), who hit her second home run of the season.
The Pioneers tacked on another run in the second inning when Abbigayle Jepsen singled down the left field line to score
Kaitlyn Paul (Albany, NY/Guilderland).
The Dutchwomen rebounded to score 12 runs over the next four innings to come away with another run-rule victory.
Jepsen and
Julia Phelps (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa High School) were each 1-for-1, while
Lauren Paul (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was 1-for-3 in the game.
Jordyn Conte (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley High School) was credited with the loss, while Granato picked up her second win of the day.
The Pioneers return to action Thursday as they travel to Medaille College. First pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
