UTICA, NY -
Ben Hladun (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake ) tossed five shutout innings en route to earning his first career victory as the Utica University baseball team downed the Cazenovia College Wildcats 5-2 on Tuesday evening.
After Hladun retired three of the first four Cazenovia hitters,
Ryan Cardone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) kept his hot bat alive with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the freshman starter and the team a 1-0 lead.
Hladun escaped a bases loaded jam in the 2nd frame as well as a 3rd inning in which the Wildcats had runners on second and first base with one away. The Pioneers added some insurance runs in the home half of the 3rd by way of a
John Son (Mellville, NY/Half Hollow Hills) RBI single to left and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cardone. The southpaw Hladun retired the side in the 4th before inducing a 4-6-3 double play while Cazenovia had men on second and first base with one away. Following the quick turn, Hladun walked a batter before ending the inning with a groundout to second.
Utica went out to a 4-0 lead in the 6th inning after a
Noah Barber (Cortland, NY/Cortland) sacrifice fly while the Wildcats cut their deficit in half to 4-2 following its 7th inning at-bats.
Brendan May (McGraw, NY/McGraw) came in to pitch the final two innings for the Pioneers, starting with an 8th inning where he faced four batters and struck out a pair. Barber drove home Cardone in the 8th inning for Utica as the team entered the 9th up 5-2 where May retired the side in order to secure the win.
Hladun allowed four hits and four free passes while striking out six over his five innings of work. May faced one batter over the minimum in his two innings as he closed the door with four strikeouts. The Wildcats left 12 men on base in the game as well.
At the plate,
Joe Crossley (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro),
Shamariah McCullough (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional), Cardone and Son each recorded two hits; Cardone doing so going 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Barber finished the evening tied with Cardone for the team lead with a pair of runs driven in as well.
Utica (10-6, 3-1 Empire 8) will turn around and host SUNY Cobleskill at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
