Field Hockey Drops Non-Conference Bout to Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY - The Utica University field hockey team fell to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles 6-2 in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.

Brockport capitalized on its only first quarter shot to carry a 1-0 lead into the second quarter before finding the back of the cage again in the 5th minute of the second frame to take a 2-0 lead. However, Alyssa Pisano (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) responded less than one minute later with a goal off of a Kylee Wojciechowski (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) pass to bring Utica to within one. The score served as the first of the season for Pisano.

The Pioneers evened the score at 2-2 just shy of four minutes after Pisano's goal when Mackenzie Mix (Camden, NY/Camden) scored her second of the season on an unassisted strike. With three minutes to go before the break, Brockport regained the lead on what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. The Pioneers out-shot the Golden Eagles 7-4 in the first half while Brockport held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles scored again in the 40th, 44th and 59th minutes to pull away with a 6-2 home win. Utica was out-shot 12-0 by Brockport in the second half while the home team drew nine penalty corners to just one by the Pioneers over the final 30 minutes.

Pisano was responsible for three of the team's seven shots while Shannon Jedreicich (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) attempted two and Mix scored on her only opportunity. In cage, Lyla Cushman (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) totaled 10 saves over 16 shots faced.

Utica (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) will remain on the road on Saturday as the team opens up Empire 8 action against the Houghton University Highlanders at 2 p.m.
